Why do people live in flatshares?

There is no definitive reason as to why people choose to live in flatshares but the main and most obvious reason is that it can drastically reduce the amount of rent that has to be paid each month by the tenant.  Some choose to live in flatshares as they prefer the company of flatmates over living on their own and some just need somewhere cost effective when working away from home for long periods.

The reason that landlords choose to offer rooms for rent as opposed to renting it out as a whole also varies.  For some it is because they do not think that they will be able to rent out it out completely to one or two people but for others it is because the location dictates that it is the best thing to do, for example in university towns.
